Wow, I didn't realize that so many people were upset with 1&1. I'll check the references you mentioned. As a matter of fact, oszen has been moved over to jonathanbuys.com, and I now host at Dreamhost.

I got on with 1&1 back in 2002 or 2001, when they first started out they gave away their professional package for free for three years. At the time I didn't think I could go wrong, and they worked out great for me for a long time. Times changed, and needs changed, and I've since stopped doing business with 1&1.

I believe I made the horrendous mistake of choosing a company because it had a 5 page ad in a popular computer magazine. In my opinion 1and1 is a horrible company and many customers have voiced a host of complaints on various blogs. It should be a warning that when their phone is answered by a recording that tells you if you have gotten a notice from NCO, a collection agency, to press a certain number. If they are a reputable business, why do they have to send so many accounts to a collection agency?
Also Investigative journalist, Kelli Jack, has written 30 articles about this company and has a suit pending against them. Kelli alleges that 1and1 stole her domain name and sold it. Kelli states: "1and1 should be shut down."

And finally, the Washington DC, Pennsylvania Better Business Bureau has them listed as "Unsatisfactory" Read comments on the BBB why. Read some customer comments on Red Flag.

Well, you need to get your work done so pick the best tools for the job. But it seems like you have great insight into some real problems with the free software desktop, and if you could someone help fix just one of them, it would mean the difference between using Linux and using Windows for hundreds if not thousands of people in situations similar to yours. Saying "goodbye" to Linux does nothing to help, though. I had the same Ubuntu coffee mug and I lost it once. But then I bought another one :)

I don't! Not at all! As a matter of fact, Do is one of the apps that I miss the most on Windows. Every time I go to start a chat with Pidgin and have to go through the motions of clicking here and there I'm reminded of how nice Do was on Linux.

The problem I mentioned with Do is not at all *only* with Do, its with a lot of the applications that ship or are available through apt-get. Fire up Synaptec and see how many applications have a version of zero-point-something. There's a whole lot of software that has not reached a 1.0 release.

Admittedly, I don't have to run any of that software. However, it is also true that Ubuntu (and just about every other distro out there) ships with beta software, and packages that just aren't ready yet to meet the shipping deadline.

The reason I wound up moving back to Windows was that there were problems in Linux that are not there in Windows. The multiple monitor support I hear has been addressed, so I might give that another shot, but the availability of certain applications that I have to run is a killer. Sure, I could keep a XP virtual machine around, but when more work starts happening in the virtual machine, you have to start wondering if running Linux as a primary desktop is really worth it.

But you must realize that Do was the product of a homework assignment. I put it online to share with others. Please do not judge Ubuntu's viability as an enterprise desktop solution by a bug in a program that Canonical does not ship.

Hi Daniel,

First off, thanks for such a great app. MarsEdit has long been a favorite of mine. You are right about taking things one step at a time. I think a lot of the problem was just putting to much pressure on myself. I probably will go back to Cocoa eventually, but I'm certainly going to enjoy my break!

As for the CocoaHeads, they are a good bunch of guys. I don't have any hard feelings or anything towards them at all. I was just trying to illustrate the changes in my plans and why I decided to walk away from programming, at least for a while.

Who knows, maybe I'll see you at WWDC one of these days!

Hi there! Two things:

I'm really glad to read any blog post where the appreciation for what goes into a product like MarsEdit is celebrated ;)

In addition to being the developer of MarsEdit, I'm also the organizer of the Boston-area CocoaHeads group. I am dismayed to learn that you got such a cold reaction to "newbie" questions at a CocoaHeads meeting. At our group you probably wouldn't have had such a cold experience. I agree the mentality on the mailing lists is often very cold and discouraging, but that's exactly the opposite from what I think many CocoaHeads chapters are aiming for.

I applaud you for giving Cocoa programming a go. Give it a try again when you get inspired again. Many of the things that seemed difficult the first time may seem easy the second time through. It's true that getting a large application to behave as you expect is a monumental task, but it gets done one step at a time, as with anything in life.

Glad to hear you like it! Are you aware of the type-to-tag bar? Press t when you have one or more picture selected in the Browser and type your tags in, tab-complete, press enter to save what you've typed. :)

Thank you for your comments! If my story made you think, then I know I've done my job. I know how you feel, believe me, I've been there. I wouldn't try to tell you what to do or anything, but it's never too late. I know that sounds cliche, but it's true. I'd encourage anyone to finish their degree, and if its really on your mind, than maybe it really is time to take another look at it.

Well I can't decide whether to applaud you or damn you for telling your story. Your article reminds me of my own academic accomplishments (or lack thereof). I was never very motivated in high school, but did manage to fumble my way through it at the time. College though, was a different story. To make a long story short, I flunked out my first year of college, went on to finish a 2 year degree, and then again did poorly when I transferred to a 4 year school. I currently still only have earned that 2 year degree and just work full time (also in IT). Not a week goes by where I don't wonder whether I should give it one more shot and buckle down and try to finish my Bachelors.

The reason I applaud you is that you overcame lots of obstacles in reaching your goal. The reason I damn you is that your story made me think it might actually be worth it to go back and finish my own degree.. I almost had myself convinced that it wasn't. Much like you, I lost a measure of respect for myself by quitting, I know I have lower expectations of myself than before.. Through your story I see that it's possible to reclaim that sense of respect, and how it might be worth it, despite the challenges (which makes my not facing them seem all the more cowardly).

In either case, a very big "congrats" to you for finishing! Along with earning back your own respect through finishing, you've earned mine by sharing your story of triumph, so thanks...
